“What it’s like” + Director of Business Development

In a world where medical care is necessary for everyone, if this means post-acute care, urgent care, elective surgery, all is important! Which brings me to this interview I feel holds dear and close to my heart. Not only because of how I met this beautiful person but how I was also introduced into the world of the medical industry.

I met Caitlin Flynn about ten years ago ( maybe more), where her and I seriously tackled the medical industry together. At the time she was an Admission Coordinator, learning swiftly the in’s and out’s of what it took to thrive and survive the skilled nursing business industry. This later helped her groom knowledge that would carry her to the next title of Marketing Director. I am proud of where this lady is going, how her ambitions to change the persona of the community (in the skilled nursing industry) by staying true to herself and serving the patients/family needs as priority.

It is such a pleasure to introduce my next “What it’s like” guest, the one and only Caitlin Flynn!

What its like - Ms. Flynn-7

  1. What is it like being a Director of Marketing?

This is such a loaded question, everyday is so VERY different . It’s stressful and challenging but I get to really touch people’s lives. If I can make this stressful time that most people go through when they need post acute care ANY easier I’ll do it. That is what really keeps me going on those tough days.

2. What is the #1 thing that people misconstrued about working in this industry?

People don’t really know what a skilled nursing facility is. Most people just think of a skilled nursing facility as the old school convalescent home. We have come so far from that and are now centered on post acute care. Helping someone return to their prior level of function and get back home as soon as possible.

3. How has the industry changed since you’ve started?

The industry has changed quite a bit in the last few years. Hospitals have now an increased pressure to participate in bundled payment care programs which in turn makes the skilled nursing facilities fight to be part of the “preferred network”. It’s a whole new ball game and we are trying to do our best to deliver the best patient care experience possible.

4. If there was one piece of advice you’d give someone who is considering being a marketer, what advice would you give?

Have thick skin. Marketing is definitely not for the faint of heart. You have to be able to face rejection on a day-to-day basis and not let it affect you . BE GENUINE!

5. What are the challenges/rewards of being a marketer?

The challenges are trying to connect with people on a personal level. Wether it be a Physician, Case Manager or even a family Member. The rewards are knowing that you were able to truly help someone in a vulnerable time in their life.

6. What has been the craziest request/encounter you’ve gotten from being a marketer?

EEEEEK ! This one is more scary than crazy but I’ve been chased down in a hospital parking lot by a transient. (Luckily I am able run fast in heels)

7. When you’ve turned your work off, and get free time to yourself, what are somethings that bring you joy?

My joy comes with spending time with my family . I love to cook and bake with my daughters (they are 3 and 10) We enjoy camping, the Dodgers and going to the beach.

8. Is there anything you’d like my readers to know?

I’d love for people to talk to their loved ones about a healthcare advance directive. Also to BE INFORMED about your Medical insurance and what it covers. Ask questions to your healthcare team and be proactive on any kind of treatment. Post Acute Care can be very overwhelming. Lastly I would love for poeple to know that you are always the FINAL choice when it comes to choosing a skilled nursing facilty . Do your reasarch and tour facilites, Often times famililes get pressured to go somewhere that dont want too becasue they think they dont have a choice.

9. Where can any perspective client look up your information and what you provide?

If anyone has skilled nursing needs they can contract me at (909) 810-7142 or go to http://www.citrusnursing.com or email cflynn@citrusnursing.com
