Farm Tour + Primal Pastures

A couple months ago a friend of mine told me to watch a documentary on Hulu called “The Biggest Little Farm”. Kind of reluctant to watch it I decided to play the movie while I was editing. Little did I realize that I’d be glued to the screen, watching the story unfold.

Which brings me to this amazing farm, Primal Pastures. When I saw they offered an opportunity for the public to tour the farm, I jumped to the opportunity and quickly signed up!

The weather was perfect, thick fog, damp weather but perfect enough to stay warm with layers of clothes. We started the tour with the chickens. I may or may not have been paying more attention to the chickens than the guide, I was watching the animals interact with each other-seeing the rhythm of their lives.

Here you see one of these guys are on duty, actively working, keeping guard. Pretty cool to see the interaction between the two, understanding roles, knowing what’s asked of them without being told.

I caught this quick glimpse of the tour guide acknowledging the guardian dog as he wags his tail coming up to the gate, you see the bond and understanding between the two.

Then we make our way to the piggies. The kunekune pigs! My first thought was Moana, and the pig in the movie. I stepped away from the crowd to watch two pigs that were a big further away, and as I look through my lens I realize this little pig is coming towards my lens! Mind you, I’ve never been around pigs so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Thank goodness these animals are a bit more docile and smaller in size I was able to greet this little creature with a friendly pat.

Then right around the corner we made our way to the sheep, and in the pin they share space with a milking cow “Emma”.

Once we were done with the cows and sheep’s, we made our way to the last part of the tour with the horses.

Super sweet to watch the silent interactions between all the animals, the unspoken language communicated that us humans don’t see unless we stop and watch- its incredible. I definitely recommend the tour to anyone that wants to see what farming is like, with transparency and especially dignity. It makes a ton of sense now why certain produce, meats cost more in the store that are labeled free range, organic USDA and etc.

Take a tour, see for yourself, you won’t regret it! I’ll definitely be coming back and experiencing the place in a different season, see how the farm is during the summer time!
