Grapefruit Blooms + Infused Water

 

During quarantine time, it’s being fun and resourceful to see what you can make in the kitchen, you start to look around and see what you have to make in order to pass the time.

Grapefruit blossoms from the backyard tree. Freshly picked and set in the bowl of water to soak and clean.

Wondering if the blossoms would take with the water, I decided to plug the petals from the flower and just grind them with a mortar and pestle. The consistency came out almost pasty, which was the consistency I was looking for. 

I boiled water, at “boiling point” temperature. Started at 2 cups of water, then added the pasty blossom to the water. {Note: Make sure your mason jar is clean and disinfected because bacteria will grow if the jar is unsanitary}

Once you’ve let it sun-brew for weeks, make sure to strain the paste out of the mixture. i used a cheese clothe to get all the pulp out. 

[Update:] I later added another 1 1/2 cups to the jar, to dilute the potency of the floral scent because the second I open the jar, the weft of the smell was overwhelming. I also ended up allowing the jar to sun-brew for an extra week, to give the water a smoother breakdown of the floral scent (total of 3 1/2 weeks) . 

Safe to say the brew is still potent and super delicious! I’ve add a splash of the water to any lemon/grapefruit drink.
